Press Release
The Montreal-based painter Malu situates her work in the tradition of Quebec abstraction pioneered by Jean-Paul Riopelle, but infuses the expressive swaths and patterns of paint that were his trademark with a completely unique and refreshing palette of warm, bright and vibrant colors. Her forbearers worked almost exclusively with black, white and red, but Malu deploys deep purples and blues, lively pinks and fertile greens. She credits time spent in Brazil for opening her eyes to these playful hues that are absent from the wintry Quebec landscape.
The most gripping aspect of Malu’s work lies in the exquisite textures and layers of paints. Here, the sheer craft and sculptural beauty of ridges, scrapes, daubs and splashes are mesmerizing, often offering flashes of colors and paints buried beneath, peaking through like beams of light. “I listen to my body and my soul because my goal is to try to interpret my visceral feelings and perception of the present moment through my paintings” says the artist. From the hyper-dynamic compositions to the rich details, Malu’s paintings are endlessly enjoyable.
Artist Statement
The significant influences in my abstract paintings have always come from those who were led by their emotions, instincts and perception. Riopelle was an instinctive painter, for example. When looking at his abstract paintings, most of the time you’re wondering what planet he was on. In my case, I can say that every time I start on a bare canvas, I always tell myself the same thing... "this time I will be minimalist" but as time goes by I cannot do it. To me it's like cutting off a phone conversation when you have so much to say. Therefore I listen to my body and my soul because my goal is to try to interpret my visceral feelings and perception of the present moment with the final result that passion, energy, movements and textures play vital roles in my art.
