Australian artist Jennifer Pinder’s abstract paintings are a study of light and color and how they interact, creating multifaceted experiences that profoundly affect the viewer. Her work is inspired by the deception of simplicity, where the images appear uncomplicated, yet change and transform depending on the viewer’s perspective and point of view. To achieve this effect, she layers colors and patterns in subtle ways, creating inner threads of multidimensional weaves, or alternately paints sculptural spikes that extrude from the canvas, which play off light and color perceptions.
Pinder’s successful career in the Australian fashion industry allowed her to study the complex simplicity of texture, color, and pattern, and how they intersect in ways that are evocative and meaningful. She has also been inspired by the classic designs and precise connecting patterns of the Middle East, where she has made her home. Her masterful use of these elements result in pieces that viewers “have to work at... [where] they can come up close and see one aspect, then move away and see something completely different.”
