The beautifully intense, spiritually sequential canvases of Davyd Whaley meld painterly narration with abstract elegance. Through meandering, rich strokes, thick with electrifying color and forcefully nuanced texture, the artist paints in episodes, with each work an expressionistic moment of his life. Opulently colored paint is profusely layered in an ornate impasto akin to such masters as Vincent Van Gogh, signifying a subtle intrigue, a hidden courage. Whaley likens his works to dreams, linked in our subconscious by ethereal themes or meanings. “We do not get all the information on how to live our everyday lives in just one dream,” he explains. “They come in short little bursts like thunderstorms. Just like storms, dreams have patterns if we piece them together.”

Davyd Whaley lives and works in West Hollywood, California, and has studied at the Arts Student’s League of New York. He won an Honorable Mention Award in the 2010 International Abstract Art Contest.

Artist Statement

The genesis of painting, for me, comes from my dreams and from my subconscious with a basis in spiritual beliefs and Jungian psychological connections .In technical terms, I am drawn to asymmetrical forms and the energy and power that the contrast of light, depth and color provokes. I build up layers – Impasto thick layers of pigment – and I generally prefer to work with a palette knife because it is more effective in helping me to achieve special color effects in the work. The raised surface is important, because it both conveys feelings and contributes a three dimensional effect to the overall piece.
