Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Photography
November 2 - November 23, 2011 Reception: Thursday November 3, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Cade Turner’s limited edition photographic prints provide a refreshing view of the most basic elements of optical experience. Inspired by the ‘visual freedom’ of the Impressionist school, Turner’s graphic experimentation or ‘painting’ with light, color and movement results in stunning photographic abstractions that push at the stubborn edge of traditional photography. Drawing upon natural and artificial sources of form including coastland and urban geography, Turner’s colorful visual manifestos frame the spontaneity of looking in a distinctly ethereal glimmer. Using his native coast of Australia as raw subject matter, the artist names the beach as a space of contemplation. While this is obviously significant, the truly fundamental aspect of his oeuvre is the way it explores the limits of photography as play with ‘liquid light,’ invoking water as a metaphor for time, life and reflection.

Cade Turner was born in Sydney, Australia. In addition to his photography, he makes a living as a Marketing Manager and currently lives in Mona Vale, located on the northern coastland of Sydney.

Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by the mystery within the raw elements of a scene – light, colour and movement. I am particularly inspired by the Great Impressionists for their sense of ‘visual freedom’ that led them to break with traditional techniques and conventions and to capture impressions of light, colour and movement in totally new ways. I love challenging traditional photography and continually blurring the line between what we consider to be ‘art’, and what is considered photography. I enjoy breaking the rules, using the camera freely as my paintbrush to paint my works with light. On location, I search for first impressions that catch my eye and work with the raw elements to develop my story. Sometimes this involves only slight alterations to what the eye naturally sees. Sometimes it involves completely decontextualizing the original scene, and working with specific elements to break through into a completely new visual dimension.
