My intention is to show that art should only present, not suggest or correct.  Nature constructs reality with harmony or not and artists represent it. Today’s artists do not present conciliated and convenient works and my art fits into today’s contemporary processes where everything converts to art if presented with vision and power. My early work was influenced by classic perceptions; today, when I produce an elegant form, I trace extracts from my culture of origin. Life itself is a dramatic event and shapes art. My works communicate my way of grasping important things.

My vocation can be explained through a combination of figures and colors aimed to produce not only a pleasant visual expression, but also an ideal suggestion of proportionate order and harmony.

I use images that give shape to the intuition of matters until I’m able to draw near what is unique and intimate in them. The shape of the visage and the harmonical details allow the observer to be free to imagine what may not necessarily be there.

I have no idea how I came to choose abstract art, I only recall that anything that all the things I saw around me gave me the inspiration to create my works. I originally used wooden spatulas to spread the paint, or smashed it with the brush, but now use anything I find. My first works used tempera, but more recently I have switched to using enamel. I always start with an idea in my mind but many times during the course of the work I have changed and ended up with another thing. I can say that I am a self-taught artist, I have not attended artistic schools but I have always had a passion for design. In time I discovered artists like Warhol and Pollock, realizing the similarities between my work and theirs. Warhol in particular fascinates me, adding another layer of interest to my art.

"M'innamoravo di tutto" (I was falling in love with  everything) said the great Italian poet and songwriter De Andrè ... I want to get all I can from this life. My path through life experiences constant evolution, as each external stimulus is a cause of mental re-engineering. I have always lived in contact with different people, from the restaurant where I grew up, through schools, the Academy, my holidays... This allowed me to enrich each time with my creative capacity. Even my techniques of creation are in perpetual evolution. I began with comics and after theater, lights, music and performance, I now focus on painting. What unifies the entire journey and my artistic research to date is the ironic eye which draws from the stimuli of the world and which impacts on my artwork.

My art is the result of long mental journeys through spaces and places never visited.

Imagination leads me to travel in space and time, chasing after my distant origins and the love for nature that surrounds us. My works are fleeting images, like visions disappearing quickly through the window of a train. The speed of the images is the sign of the speed of life: space and time come together in a way that is inseparable.

With every new painting I create I try to realize a certain special quality. Sometimes I almost seem to touch it, but whether I do or not, it remains important to me to try every time, and the desire to reach it inspires me to continue. Before creating my paintings I make several studies with pencil on paper to get the best idea of the perspective that is right for the object represented - a perspective that will confirm the sense of space I wish to portray. Most of my work is in oils, because I find it to be the most sensual material, which allows me to do my best work and bring out the sensuality of daily articles and the objects of ordinary life.

I do not limit myself to any one way of creating art, but rather constantly explore the possibilities, from abstract to figurative. I feel that freedom of expression in this sense is vital in order to give shape to the ideas in my head and the range of my experiences and emotions. In addition, I have found that some concepts are best portrayed according to one artistic tradition, and others using the tools of another, and I try to match my technique to the topic I am dealing with, sometimes requiring more than one painting to do justice to it.

Since I was small, I liked to color, draw and create. At the age of 12 I attended a course in painting and drawing and never stopped after that. In fact, I studied up until graduation, thus enriching myself with the basics of drawing and painting. I specialize in technology, oil and use a spatula and hands rather than brushes. My work begins realistic to reach a conceptual, lyrical, surreal and often abstract, but also figurative point of view. The immediate impact is already from the title, which expresses the hidden meaning of the work.

Fotis Galanopoulos

Fotis GalanopoulosFotis Galanopoulos

The paintings by Greek artist Fotis Galanopoulos are a vigorous tour around the highly imaginative world of his creation. There is a magical quality to his work enhanced by a worldview that the universe is there to be explored and by doing so it will unfold its primeval truths. Using oil palette knife and canvas, Galanopoulos crafts his sumptuously colored works that flow and careen around the canvas with bold lines and intricate configurations. Metaphysical ideas are woven into most pieces, that of birth and rebirth of the universe, tribal ideologies and enduring maritime lifeways of the islands. Herein one may discover compelling characters, a variety of plant life, shooting stars and endless seas stippled with boating sails.

Galanopoulosʼ work is instantly recognizable for its inventive characters and unusual compositional quality that is full of life. These are not merely pictures but an intimate exchange between artist and audience from which a personal meaning will arise. Fotis Galanopoulos exhibits his work frequently in Greece, Cyprus and the United States.

Gio

GioGio

Italian artist Gio abstractly represents nature in all its force and beauty.  In his paintings, the disposition of each color is sensitively determined, and they work together to form a viscerally felt mood. His mysterious forms reflect an interest in Nordic Runes and Rosicrucian symbols.  Having achieved an original, personal style, Gio is studious of the history of abstract painting.  Drawing inspiration as much from Action Painting as Op Art, his radiant, individual sensibility shines through his dazzling brushstrokes.

Gio investigates color’s potential to probe and heal the viewer’s psyche.  Goethe and Rudolf Steiner have proved very influential to his thinking.  Intellectually curious across multiple disciplines, Gio invites complex, varied interpretations.  Also an accomplished drummer, he credits music’s influence in the creation of his work.  He generally paints with oils on canvas, but has experimented over time with various media.  Through canvases that vibrate with frenetic multicolored forms, Gio communicates a willingness for fantastic events to occur in our lives.

Colors have always marked my life! Drawing too, ever since my youth. In my country the nature is particularly rich, providing beautiful landscapes and sea views, intense lights or dark shadows. A great source of inspiration. Also the influence of the art of the past holds sway over me - I especially love Caravaggio. My first wish was to represent in oils the reality of what was in front of me, in the best possible way, keeping in the forefront of my mind the poetry of the landscape and the feelings which are contained within it. More recently I have discovered the joy of using acrylic and a palette knife to represent things differently, through the power of color and my own emotions. Now I use both techniques to create my work.

My works are born from a rapport with nature and the world around me, and in that sense are always an expression of my life broadly speaking, and of my daily existence. Sometimes I create in order to experiment with alternative materials, or with different combinations of materials and color. Sometimes I am seeking the harmony that comes when I find the correct form, the right colors and details. I want to use all of my talent and hard-earned skill to express my more beautiful experiences, my emotions, so that someone looking at my work will also be moved by what he sees.

I have searched for the symbol, found it, then lost it and now I see it in the distance, but I still see it. I have described my story. I’ll continue to describe it. I sense fireflies of thought fluttering within me, small atoms of feeling—transparent, sweet and melancholic, though sometimes harsh and cruel. I admire my work for the imperfections in its structure, for my deliberate mistakes, for my checked imagination. My work is the object of meticulous confession that is all too clear to me in certain symbols that I cannot avoid or turn aside, confessions of centuries of Art.

I was born in a small village in northern Greece in the summer of 1951, at a time when we were emerging from the ruins of the Second World War into a time of great new forces in all areas of life. Those two influences, of the near past and the emerging forces of the future, are always present in my life, both exercising great powers on me transforming my life and my work. Equally, the power of the present also has its effect and certainly the world around me enriches me constantly with new impressions. The sweet fragrances of our planet, the strong desires, the wisdom of great teachers, the grandeur of the universe, our conception of infinity and eternity, the unknown, all of these things, at times tormenting and at times exalting me, are strong forces that form myself and my work as I evolve.

I live in Biella, Italy where I work in a small, yet inspiring attic.  There, I cut and paste, trying to tell stories, apparently ordinary; they are someone else’s stories, emotions that have delighted or caused sadness to who, in that moment, lived. My wooden boards are a puzzle of ideas and thoughts, hardly explicit, but always edged by the sensual pleasure of color. I like to imagine my works as ironic journeys, full of dreams and thoughts, imaginary references and quotes realized through the culture of living in the past, present and future.

Both the classical tradition and the developments of the modern world are very important to me and play a major role in my art. I try to combine the two, to elaborate on contemporary issues and ideas through familiar techniques. My main inspiration is and has always been the human figure, which plays a continually developing role in my paintings. This unites both the traditional and the contemporary elements in my work, a source of constant creativity and renewal in the fast-paced modern world. It has connections to the many forms of media that characterize our times, and ties my work to both the past and the future.

Costas Petrides

Costas PetridesCostas Petrides

Costas Petrides’ paintings of an otherworldly “space-scape” invite the viewer’s eye on a visual and spiritual journey through a new geography rich with perceptible symbols.  Although the artist intends for viewers to make their own interpretive observations and find their own personal meanings in his works, Petrides imparts a deep religious undercurrent to each of his paintings of the heavens.  His bold paintings, which illustrate the infinite and incomprehensible magnitude of space, reference the omnipotence of God or the Absolute.  Petrides utilizes an abstracted vocabulary of personal symbols, painted directly from his own soul, thus resulting in a deeply personal and highly ethereal body of work.

Born in Cyprus, artist Costas Petrides began painting as a means to express his innermost feelings, thoughts and experiences. Petrides, who also works as a psychologist, possesses a profound understanding of the human psyche. He encourages his viewers to explore his works with an open mind and feel the healing power that only art can bring.

Ever since my youth I have been attracted by the creativity of painting in all its forms. I am dedicated to finding new techniques, from pencil to pastels to china and oil on canvas. An artistic journey begun in art school and continued at the University of Architecture in Venice, was born of my deep passion for drawing, and meticulous taste in color, by the desire to communicate a magical atmosphere, offering the viewer strong emotions. The objects of my attention have been many, from landscape, serene expanses of greenery and water, cottages, churches and castles, flowers and ethnic faces. My desire is to awaken the freedom and sensibility that is in each one of us, to help us discover the beauty of nature and what it can give us.

I have been interested in colours and the representation of the world ever since I was quite young, and those same feelings motivate me today. My activity as a photographer began in the 1970s and since then I have explored colour, black and white, and digital photography. In 1983 I narrowly escaped a collapsing ceiling during my sleep, an experience which has left me with sleeping problems which mean that I spend much of the night awake, creating new ideas and fantasies which give rise to new photographic works and concepts. I would like my art to impress whoever looks at it, to inspire emotions, to involve the person looking at it, to convey something.

In Australia I am Greek, in Greece I am Australian. For most of my life, I have known two countries. However, I spent the majority of it in Australia. Born and raised there by immigrant parents, I grew used to a subconscious sensation of isolation. It may have been my father's words that “one day we would return to Greece” that evoked feelings of displacement and the idea that the environment I was being raised in and the landscape that surrounded me was not the right place for me. This made me feel very small against the enormous landscapes and direct environment that surrounded me. This emotion is something that I carried with me for a very long time and now represent in my body of paintings. It is important to recognize the natural need of a human being to find a place to belong to.

I think that a white canvas is not merely a surface to be filled with colors and shapes. It is a wide open window to my creative soul. For myself, creating art allows me to express my innermost thoughts and ideas. For others, I hope that my freedom of expression will correspond to free interpretation on their part. My work is an invitation to dream - it contains a whole world which, though similar to reality, departs from it in a profound way and encourages viewers to look beyond their ordinary boundaries. Its purpose is to spread joy and vitality.

Luca Scopetti

Luca ScopettiLuca Scopetti

Luca Scopetti's work is often thematically focused on the human condition, and his visual exploration of these fervently held topics conjures a universe of textures and forms. Whether he conducts a frenzy of colors and shapes that climb up the canvas, or focuses on visual motifs that are more iconic and symmetrical, his paintings tap directly into the viewer's subconscious through a dance of shapes that occupy a space partly in the material world and partly in a dream state. Yet Luca's paintings remain grounded in real-life concerns, with a dynamic mix of organic forms lying hidden within his abstract gyrations. His works conjure an equally wide range of moods, by turns carnivalesque, brooding, or contemplative.

There is a dual nature to the passion in Luca's aesthetic--his focus is both formal as well as thematic, and his innovative use of the canvas has its counterpart in his courageous delving into the psychological. He challenges as well as invites us with these original, visually appealing works.

He currently works and resides in Fornacette-Pisa, Italy.

My creative work stems from the world of architecture, having been an editorial co-ordinator for architect magazines.  As an assistant to my husband, a professional photographer of architecture and art, with the SPONGAdiffusione, 1972/92, I followed the creation and realization of textiles. This past experience helped stimulate my imagination and the desire to explore and experiment with textile materials in order to create new textures. It was my encounter with Marina Giannangeli, architect and textile designer, 1990/94, which brought about a turning point towards a new direction: a casual and rational use of the most diverse kinds of flexible materials, creating three-dimensional works made with different materials. My continuous encounter with modern art over the years has allowed me to build up an entirely personal language. I am frequently invited to national and international exhibitions and symposiums. My works are also part of public and private collections.

Vania Stefou

Vania StefouVania Stefou

The dynamic of being human serves as Vania Stefou’s primary inspiration, especially the physical complexity of the human body and its systems. The way we are wired internally, and what that wiring yields in our world - this is all part of the artistic landscape Vania explores in her art. Her work process involves her exploration of the vivid interactions between varying types of paint colors and textures, as well as using different types of paint, including acrylic and metallic. At times the composition of her paintings is deliberately symmetrical, employing the repetition of forms across her canvas as a means of highlighting variations in tone and shading. She employs a mix of abstract expressionism and real-life elements inspired by ocean life, earth-bound life and outer space to embrace a holistic view of the universe we live in and its infinite possibilities.

Vania lives and works amidst the islands of Greece, a location that continues to feed her creative spirit.

I live and paint in Marino, a small town in the Castelli Romani near Rome. My studio is located on the lip of a volcano wherein lies a beautiful round deep blue lake. I hear the sound of festivities, traffic and voices outside my window while I paint. I’m fascinated by the quality and intensity of Mediterranean light and its almost liquid quality. The sea, the vineyards, the forests, whatever the subject, it’s all about chiaroscuro. More than just visual, the hand-smoothed and whitewashed walls, overhanging palms and bougainvillea, forests of fine-leafed trees, stairways and arches that lead to sunlit piazzas, are reminiscent of happy discoveries. I want my paintings to speak to the heart, like a good friend. I am happy to know that people grow to love my paintings more and more as the years pass by.
