For me, the passion and pleasure of painting is first and always in making the art, and then in the people I meet along the way. I am constantly exploring new ideas, subjects, methods and materials, and everything I experience has an influence on my work. At present my interest is in finding a complexity in simple abstract shapes that will call on the imagination, engage and challenge the viewer to explore an underlying feeling or emotion that goes beyond words. My tools are strength, determination, serenity, passion, harmony, freedom, paint, colour, design, shape, pattern, line, texture, value, edges and space, repetition with variety, movement and rhythm.

My creations describe dramatic emotions, life’s beliefs, fears related to humans and wildlife. Every time I create is to make a statement or outline a concept. I believe that an artist has to talk with shapes and forms, about his life and life itself. We are witnesses and our works are traces of time. Human and animal forms are my vehicle of expression. They are modulated and transformed into dramatically theatrical entities. They represent thoughts more than subjects. My favourite material is clay, because it connects me to the past. I use it to create ceramic sculptures. When I work in large scale sculptures, cement and concrete are my mediums. They are used with armatures creating hollow, yet very strong forms. The extreme northern climate of Québec made me develop a sculptural technique that resists the elements. Fighting with the elements is another passion of mine, and part of my art.

My childhood love of art grew to be my main passion as an adult. Painting and drawing was the best way I could truly express myself as a youngster and as I matured. When I first began taking my art seriously I enjoyed painting the female figure and still objects. As my techniques expanded, I found myself most drawn to nature. More recently I have been focusing on painting trees and feel completely fulfilled. My contemporary spin on painting trees is what has made me most recognized as an emerging Canadian artist.
Since I am continuously creating, I look forward to what the future holds for my art. I follow my instincts and let my thoughts transfer to canvas. I continue to strive to learn new techniques and work with different mediums. I hope you enjoy my work as much I adore creating it.

I love to combine many colors harmoniously while emphasizing the subject's simple shapes and pleasant flow of line. As a mature person I have experienced some of life's ups and downs, having brought up a large family and had interesting travel experiences with family and friends - all of which have influenced my art. I am interested in what happens around me and in world events that, in the end, will affect all of us. I am also interested in how we handle the differences in our cultures, politics, and environment which will be crucial to the future. In the meantime, I will paint harmony and the ordinary things that happen around us so we don't forget how important they are. To sum up - my art is an extension of myself. I am very grateful to have the opportunity to practice and explore the many facets of art.

I believe that my approach to "sensual beauty", combined with my style of execution is somewhat unique in the art world. I am extremely sensitive to beauty in both the human form, particularly the female form, and in the natural environment. To portray this in the right way, to give it the necessary lushness and detail, I am willing to put as many hours as necessary into a given piece of work. My ambition is simply to bring pleasure to people now, and into the future. For them to have a painting or a print on their wall, and to love it as much in 10 years time as they did the first time they saw the piece. I often have people tell me that, and it always makes me feel good.

My first excursion into the art world consisted of creating crayon masterpieces, and selling them door-to-door for twenty-five cents. Though still passionate about the process of creating artwork, my current emphasis is on Canada's lack of a collective spiritual identity. I want to communicate to the viewers of my work the connection we all share with one another. There are basic human needs we all experience; the need to be loved, appreciated, supported, and encouraged by our community. Art is meant to communicate to others ideas that cannot be expressed through words, and I want my work to transcend the barriers between people, communities, and nations. So many of our current problems are the result of miscommunication, and I want to reveal that we are part of a grand collective. This realization is imperative if we are to create loving communities, wealthy nations, and inspiring works of art.

Painting entered my life all of a sudden. I met Seymour Segal, who changed my life and gave me a new purpose, allowing me to discover a new side of myself. I offer workshops to adults and children to allow them to share my joy and experiences. I am always learning something new about myself and it might take me years to figure out who I really am, but the road I am taking is challenging and rewarding. My life accomplishments - I founded a prize-winning publishing company which specializes in Quebec literature - have motivated me to become more creative in exploring paths that are bold and authentic, and developing new ventures that are personal and reflect my passion for painting.

For me, painting is sometimes theater, sometimes poetry and always life as my mind constructs it. My painting is always about what is going on in the world that we live in, so as a corollary it should be understood that it is all about what is going on in my mind. Politics and humans are always fascinating and more often than not are very disappointing. Yet I do not conceive art as therapy for this disappointment, for I am in many ways a romantic, an incorrigible optimist. I am very independent so I do the work, I create, regardless of what other people will think of it. I started showing my work at 27 years old, after finishing university. That was 34 years ago, and I am still at it. I intend to continue.

As an artist and visual consumer, I am forced to adapt to the ever-changing social, environmental and political climate and my work demonstrates that tension. Using deconstructionist methods, I represent the complex with the elemental, so that the most complex forms are made to be simple, yet are still able to combine to produce a balanced, coherent vision. I use this technique to draw attention to and express ideas about human involvement with the natural environment, and other global issues. Nature and art are always to be interpreted and, like much of life, my work is concerned with discovery and presents connections which it is up to the viewer to explore and come to understand. Despite the control, geometry and balance of my work, the intent is to allow for complete viewer interpretation.

My paintings are iconic landscape images. I prefer to paint with acrylics over wood in mid to large sizes. My style is heavy texture with saturated colour in layers. I have always been drawn towards landscapes with my favourite release being the solitude of sketching en plein air. The overall mood is an expression of my emotions, transferring my feelings to anthropomorphize the landscapes. The underlying theme is recording the effects I have seen with climate change and man’s domination of nature, overlapping with my own life experiences and identifying with nature’s struggles. There is an optimistic beauty in my paintings that also mirrors my psyche, capturing an overlap of my life experiences and the landscape’s struggles at a particular moment.

I only discovered that art was an important part of my life, personality and gifts in 2008. Before that, the only indication that I might have skills in that direction was the interest and joy I took in creating graphics, which I have done since I was 15 years old. The summer of 2008 was a dramatic time for me, characterized by both the tragic loss of my grandparents and the discovery that I could create art. Since then my skills and interests have been constantly developing, and I feel that I can produce visual interpretations of any piece of music I hear. It is always exciting and I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunities that I have.

Mexican-born artist Alberto Velazquez’s paintings reverberate with an energy that awakens the spirit and stimulates the intellect. His profound body of work is a visual that reflects a wide-range of life experiences including his original observations of human nature. Drawing artistic influence and brilliant color palette from his Mexican heritage, Velazquez’s distinctive abstract works shimmer with an organic essence and universal appeal. His paintings speak to the viewer through purity of shape and color, transcending time and place, and expressing the artist’s spirituality outside the realm of organized religion. With each ambient work, Velazquez invites the viewer in to see inside his infinite imagination, to explore conceptual themes like fertility, emotion, piety and self-reflection.
A self taught artist who has independently studied the works of revolutionary Mexican painters like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, Alberto Velazquez began painting seriously at the age of 22. Since then he has produced over 300 works, participating in group and solo exhibitions in Mexico and Canada. The artist lives and works in Ontario, Canada.

My paintings create a feeling of connecting with the world and the conviction to survive and go beyond today’s restrictions. Playing with colors and textures is my focus and passion. All my creations start with an acrylic base and then I apply color ink after my foundation is finished. Most of the time I let my intuition decide what to do without really thinking about it. My technique is a continuous search for new visual effects never seen before. My collection includes Abstracts, flowers, nudes and collages that are a reflection of my daily life; the good and the bad, the excitements and the deceptions.
