In the mixed media sculptures and paintings of Thierry Fazian, disparate elements come together in unexpected ways. Drawing on his impressions of his birthplace in the French West Indies, Fazian highlights the hybridity native to this region in his art, images that in turn become a veritable melting pot of elements, reflective of the beauty and paradox of his home. The very nature of his work reflects an unusual mixture, composed as it is of a tantalizing combination of sculpture and painting which he refers to as ‘Sculpicture’and which epitomizes the concept of hybridization.
Using contemporary mediums and matter like acrylics, resin, and computer generated images, Fazian crafts vistas pleasingly complex and rich in color and texture, juxtaposing seemingly contradictory elements in new ways. But despite his unusual compositions, overall his images emanate a sense of harmony and peace — a profound acceptance of all the wonder than can be born from difference. What results is a new artistic vision reflective of all the depth and beauty French Caribbean artists have to offer the international art world.
