Press Release

Vivid, evocative color splashes through the transcendent planes of lush paint that characterize Susan Marx’s work. Spontaneous brushstrokes produce a playful sense of the organic and immediate. Her dedication to formalism, combined with her passionate reinterpretation of the world, results in paintings that are as breathtaking as they are compelling. “My art is a result of my radical amazement at the visual world around me and my need to turn that visual experience into paint. Nature may be my starting point, but it is not my end result,” she explains. Her paintings are in conversation with artists such as Monet, Van Gogh and Joan Mitchell, yet she strikes a unique note, enlightened by her own visual impressions. Marx often paints outside, en plein air, and even when working inside is informed by this direct experience of nature, inhaling natural beauty and exhaling her sensations in a truly impassioned creation of color that epitomizes the current moment.

Exhibited widely throughout the United States, Marx’s work can be found in private collections in the United States and abroad. Susan Marx lives in Orange, New Jersey.

Artist Statement

My art comes from my radical amazement at the visual world around me, and my need to turn that visual experience into paint. Nature is my starting point, but not my end result. I observe nature very carefully and respond spontaneously to what I see and feel. I think of painting as drawing in color, relating warm and cool with each expressive paint-filled brushstroke, my personal handwriting. Every painting is a study in design, the placement of shapes on canvas, a concern with the plastic elements. I paint outside, en plein air, which lets me feel the landscape I am painting. Working with acrylics allows me to record color impressions quickly with immediacy. When painting inside, I am also inspired by nature. Someone once said I work to the muse of Monet, Van Gogh and Joan Mitchell; I was thrilled. The visual world is transformed into my own personal visual expression during the painting process as the painting speaks to me and I respond.
