Press Release

American artist Steven R. Hill creates inspired images full of light, color and movement that grasp the essence of the beauty and energy that makes up these modern scenes from everyday urban and rural life. With a background as an abstract painter, Hill has immersed himself in more representational work with a plein air approach that lends a fresh, free feel to each of his paintings. But he still finds abstract possibilities within figurative subjects, allowing him to push the limits of light, color and textures to create new yet familiar vistas.

Hill’s paintings have everything to do with time and place, with moments of escape from the frenetic energy that underscores contemporary society. Although set in a modern context, his images are timeless, reminding us of the perseverance of the human spirit and the inescapable beauty just waiting to be found in ordinary contexts. In the end, Hill’s work allows the viewer to begin to transcend the trappings of society and remember the inherent riches of our world.

Steven R Hill's artwork was recently published in “Best of Worldwide Artists in Drawing, Pastel and Charcoal” by Kennedy Publications.  "Harbor in Evening” painted en plein air in Lumbarda, Croatia, is one of three images of his work selected for this book.

Artist Statement

I’ve had enough formal training in both music and art to recognize some very key similarities. Musical harmony, tempo and interpretive themes are not unlike the mechanical relationships I use to explore concepts, visual form and structure as a painter. Finding abstract possibilities within a representational subject always excites me far more than faithful reproduction, as does pushing the limits of color and light, to give subjects a new cadence. Many surprises can happen between initial ideas and finished paintings, especially if the piece takes a left turn when maybe I expected a right… it’s all part of the song. My preference for working in situ (en plein air) underscores my desire to capture the more elusive moment-in-time, mood, feel or essence of any given subject. It is very important for me to understand and maintain these elements as the main theme between the initial idea and finished painting.
