Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Fine Art Photography

In her exquisitely colorful and textured plant details, photographer Sharon Hickey hones in on nature’s otherworldly abstract details. These playful, intimate and delicate extreme close-ups allow Hickey to work on drastically different visual and emotional scales from her commercial, event and editorial photography. Often taking inspiration from the lush vegetation of her native Australia, as well as landscapes encountered on her many journeys abroad, Hickey locates delight in botanical drama. With her playful titles, she suggests different ways of seeing and characterizing natural imagery.

While shooting, she crops each crisp image to provide virtually no spatial context. Against unrecognizable backdrops, the strange forms, colors, shapes and surfaces of petals, leaves, pollen and stems take on all manner of formal or expressive quality. Jutting follicles become dancers moving around each other in frenzied patterns, leathery leaves catch the light while arching into focus, creased patterns and folds guide our eyes over alien territories. Isolating these spectacular floral details, Hickey opens a magical new landscape to our wandering eyes.

Artist Statement

Australian landscapes are often very graphic and vivid in color and I have tried to incorporate these images within my work. I tend to work in bodies or series of photographs when exploring a subject. With my nature studies, I enjoy moving deep within the subject and finding its essence and unique abstract quality. I especially enjoy the moment when the subject becomes indefinable. The work then becomes an expression of color, shape and movement and not an image of reality. I hope this encourages the viewer to appreciate the image for itself and not to classify and codify it as a known object before they can enjoy it.
