Press Release
Whether her paintings are figurative or abstract, American artist Sandra Mueller-Dick imbues each image with a pervading sense of mood and expressionism that transcends the original subject. By integrating strong color contrasts and shapes, she creates rhythmic patterns throughout the painting that elicit strong responses from her viewers. Working in watercolor, mixed media, and oils, Mueller-Dick offers a true exploration of the gestalt, of the essence and mystery of natural objects and terrains regularly encountered in everyday life. In each of Mueller-Dick’s paintings, her original subject is inevitably transformed from a representational concept to something decidedly more complex as it comes to encompass a greater level of emotion. Indeed, it is this inextricable emotive quality that increasingly opens the work to interpretation. By adding a dreamlike aspect or feeling of mystery to the canvas, she invites the viewer to connect personally to each painting, provoking them to see the world in an entirely new way.
Sandra Mueller-Dick is currently a gallery instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Artist Statement
Much of my work emanates from themes that are important to me, such as the figure and landscape. I start with something representational, which then evolves to become more abstract. 'Rays of Hope', for example, began with body parts, and developed into abstraction. My goal is always both to portray and evoke emotion, encouraging viewers to interpret what they see for themselves. I try to speak directly to the inner life of my audience, helping them to know and stay in touch with who they are, and to find that which can bring comfort and solace to their lives.
