Press Release
Rupert Davis is a visionary artist who has been awakened to the energies in the world. With his camera and a receptive manner he captures inspiring images of lush woodlands, flowing rivers and towering cityscapes. He is a devout naturalist and feels a direct spiritual bond with the character of the earth. Davis has a gift for quietly and humbly perceiving the beauty in his environment, the sheen of water or sunlight cascading through forest canopy; the world has opened her arms to him. "It simply ‘happens’ and my greatest skill lies in truly allowing it to happen, not restricting or limiting or manipulating the creative energies that are at work," Davis explains. His photographs are usually large and produced on canvas or photographic print, providing viewers with a serene environment to explore.
Davis is a self-taught artist who, after only four years, has published and exhibited photographs in the UK and New York, with pieces held in private collections in far-flung locations like Australia and Maui. He lives and works in London.
Artist Statement
Five years ago, waiting for a train, I had a strong impulse to buy a camera. I bought a disposable camera and just about made it onto my train... Since then my photography has developed as an intuitive and naturally evolving expression of myself and what I see around me. My thing is beauty, and the soul behind everything. I love to capture what feels like the essence of something, that which gives it life, uniqueness, and its own beauty, whether it is a tree, a building or a person. At times my pictures are abstract, at times more classical. It is the depth and feeling of a scene or person that calls me to photograph. Sometimes I can be lost in a state of joy, surrendered to whatever is unfolding around me, inviting it to fill the camera. I also teach photography and creativity, leading people to discover their own creative potential.
