Sunny afternoons and barefoot splashes in the water; these scenes of simple pleasures are a reflection of Rebecca Darlington’s love of the good life. Her paintings display joyful color and brushwork, but are further compelling because of the romantic subtext, often focusing on youthful wonder and sublime comforts. Her love of travel and of French culture gives Darlington’s work an additional depth. “Some painting themes are compiled from my drawings,” she states, “Sketches of my boys playing by the pool and lots of traveling scribbles while on trains and in restaurants.” Darlington delights in the sumptuous nature of oil painting as she spreads on delicious layers of color with an expert comprehension of the way that light dances off various objects and textures. Darlington earned a BFA from the University of Georgia and traveled abroad to study bronze casting in Italy. After working as a designer for twenty years, she began to paint full-time in 2000. Darlington has exhibited frequently in the dynamic arts community of the Lower Hudson Valley in New York State, where she lives and works.
