Peter Rademacher

Contemporary German Art: The New York Experience
March 23 - April 13, 2010 Reception: Thursday March 25, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Artist Peter Rademacher uses a wide variety of different tools, including pencil, chalk, paint and charcoal, yet what is consistent throughout his work is that the dynamic of human relationships thrives so vividly on his canvases. The shadows that fall on the human body, the lines created by the turning of limbs and torso, the drama of point of view — these are Peter's subjects and the means by which his art describes the depths and heights of human experience. He has said that he often relies upon spontaneous compositions arising out of the work process, like a rhythm or melody come forth out of improvisation. He follows his imagination's lead uncensored, regardless of the subject, with the important thing being that his imagery lives in dynamic balance with all its constituent elements.

In all of Peter's work, whatever the tools he uses, this relationship to his inner creative process is clear, for his work is always alive and in the moment.

Artist Statement

My pictures describe encounters and situations which arise from viewing photos or just from the imagination. With pencil, chalk and vigorous charcoal brushstrokes I express my feelings on paper. It results in spontaneous compositions swinging more and more like a rhythm. Here, I let my imaginations run wild, regardless of the subject and whether it is being expressed through realism or abstract expressionism. The important thing is that the image arises spontaneously, quickly. Contrasting colours, geometric arrangements of the subject and adding graphic elements (e.g. drypoint and wood block-print) contribute to the vitality of the entire work. In all my pictures, the graphic elements are in the foreground and they are the key to the overall impression.
