Press Release

The journey of exploration into the elusive mysteries of the natural world is the creative motivation behind the artistic partnership of Paul Tappenden and Joanna Dickey. Streambeds provide an endless number of intimate environments that naturalists Tappenden and Dickey reveal through their art. The subject matter inspires a wide range of artistic experimentations: the movement of water, reflection of objects outside the picture plane and the stunning colors and textures of nature. The remarkable technique of Fresco Découvrir pairs the ancient medium of fresco painting with an impasto stylistic approach. Paintings transform into visual symphonies that echo rhythms of the scenes from which they emerged, capturing the vision of the moment or becoming powerful abstractions of colliding colors and forms. Throughout, the attention to detail and the handling of fresco create an oeuvre of impeccable quality and beauty. Paul Tappenden and Joanna Dickey work from their studio at the Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center in southern New York State.

Artist Statement

Each one of our paintings is the record of a journey.  Each journey is filled with adventure and excitement, which we ultimately hope to share with the viewer. The magic of our medium is that it has its own personality, which is filled with surprises.  Sometimes things happen that are so beautiful, we can barely control our excitement, like two children opening gifts. During our sojourns through this mysterious world, we rarely plan the journey or even attempt to identify the destination.  This allows the story to unfold of its own accord, and keeps the mystique intact. We are often reticent to call a piece finished.  Once we sign a piece, the journey is officially over.  However, the adventure remains for the viewer to discover.
