Rich, diverse textures characterize the works of New Zealand artist Patricia Armour, speaking to a myriad human emotions and experiences. Using the timeless, evocative medium of woven tapestry, Armour deftly interprets the poignant myths and legends of world history, speaking to the metaphors and stories that have formulated our understanding of the world around us. The human figure haunts these works with a contemplative, tranquil and mystical beauty alluring in its unique exquisiteness. Armour is inspired by the European tapestry tradition, as well as artists working in her native New Zealand, and interprets their techniques and practices with her own exceptional vibrancy in color, form and shape. The result combines the authenticity of tradition with the verve of contemporary life. “I interpret the drawn or painted mark into a woven mark – developing colors or shades by using multiples of fine yarns as my palette,” she explains.
A native New Zealander, Patricia Armour has studied tapestry in her native country and the United Kingdom, and exhibited her work internationally.
