Press Release
Whether imparting impressions of the seaside, creating cool statuesque figures, or working in full abstraction, Mia Gjerdrum Helgesen maintains her remarkable style throughout. Gjerdrum Helgesen works mainly in acrylics on canvas or linen, in an approach that is full of energy and painterly finesse. “I see myself as an artist in the process of exploring my different techniques and styles,” she says of her art. It is in the variation of subject that one may see her many interests. Gjerdrum Helgesen’s representational work is particularly fascinating, employing a printmaker’s graphic style in combination with her well-defined sense of color. Whether working with the fresh blues of the sea or the mellow urban hues of her home, her abstract work displays her sense of control, limiting her strokes and allowing the image to melt into the white of the canvas. Gjerdrum Helgesen earned her Master’s degree at the National College of the Arts in Oslo, Norway in 2000. She earned a BA in Commercial Art at the Westerdals Commercial Art College, Oslo and was an honor student with courses at the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco. She opened her own studio and gallery in 2005. She continues to pursue her artistic career, exhibiting in Norway and the United States.
