lCUEVAS

The Persistence of Form
May 11 - June 1, 2010 Reception: Thursday May 13, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

For New York-raised, New Jersey-based artist and teacher lCUEVAS, art involves finding and creating havens for self-expression and personal development. Recurring themes in her surreal oil and pastel compositions include preceding feminist artists like Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo, contemplative moments, Edenic imagery and the story of Eve. lCUEVAS refuses to be confined by the label of “feminist art,” though; her subjects address fundamentally broader issues of morality, sexuality and identity.

Her paintings and pastels often straddle abstract and figurative realms, with favorite subjects like bodies, fruits and plants melting and blurring into sensual fields of color and texture. Here, amid decontextualized objects and forms, lCUEVAS maintains our focus on bodies and personal sanctuaries. Skin-toned shapes and shaded organic forms dominate most canvases, as if extreme close-ups of bodies might help to reveal their inner truths. In this sense, lCUEVAS’s art manages to be extremely personal – delving into intimate imagery and ideas – and unmistakably universal, exploring the boundaries between public and private identities.

Artist Statement

My work has been described as feminist. However, I touch upon themes that are universal; life, death, love, loss and joy. No matter what the medium, the work is allegorical in nature. I draw parallels and references from past and present. I view my work as a cross influence of Mary Cassette, Georgia O’Keefe and Freda Khalo with a little Dali for good measure. My work is a reflection of both the “self” and of observations and responses to my environment, culture, tradition, influences, and beliefs. It is how I made sense, and still make sense, of the world around me.
