Caribbean artist Lali Lalie is on an eternal quest for truth. Her abstracted oil paintings reduce the world to the bare essentials, stripping away aesthetics and artifice, and seeking out the hidden beauty of the reality that lies beneath. Her works, rich with unusual colors, and alive with a powerful gestural movement, reveal that beauty exists in every aspect of life, from the terrifying to the mesmerizing. Beauty, it seems, is not tied to appearance, but in actuality, tied to a greater certainty. Reflecting the cultural melting pot of Caribbean society, Lali Lalie’s paintings are influenced by an intercontinental assortment of traditions, but adhere to none. Instead they present her unique, unabashed look at the world and the discoveries she continues to make.
Born in Guadeloupe, Lali Lalie has exhibited her work internationally, in the Caribbean, Europe and Asia including at the prestigious art fairs in Shanghai and Guangzhou, China.
In my art, I experiment with "Urban Tribalism". Rather than seek beauty, it is more important to pursue any line, point or circle for the truth that is hidden - true beauty may find its niche even in terror or ugliness. My work is a gesture with consequences.
I work with conviction, advocating authenticity, sincerity and commitment. I live and was born on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, and my background contains Caribbean, African, Asian and European cultural influences. My painting refelcts all of these, exposing the indelible traces of a society sometimes ignored, obscured, even diluted. I work on the impact of the visible and invisible elements from the past on our present.
