Press Release

The paintings of South African born artist Kevin Connolly Gillespie are surrealist ventures into the grand scale of imagination. Compelling motifs of life and death, humanity and nature, intermingle against a backdrop of rugged mountains, contemplative waters, and boundless skies. His works are interactive allegories, requiring the interpretation of each viewer as ideas pointed to, yet never fully expressed. With Surrealist influences, Gillespie paints in a clean, finished style imagery that ranges from soothing and subtle to grandiose journeys of the mind’s eye. Growing up in an environment of incessant change, Gillespie was continually exploring his surroundings and his role within them. Art became a way to externalize the internal. “Painted images,” he explains, “may solidify my future aspirations, or provide commentary for life perspective.” Now relocated to the heart of New York’s art scene, Gillespie has experienced an explosion of creative activity. He lives and works in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
