The subjects of Kensuke Shimizu’s pen and ink paintings float in a dreamlike space delineated by a loose network of lines, and squares of rich color and text. Like Chagall, Kensuke presents his subjects floating, yet unlike Chagall, Kensuke’s subjects exist in an abstract space, relying on lines and colors for their landscape. His work is a daring mix of drawing and color saturation that subtly mines our collective and personal psychologies.
There is a quiet narrative within his works, which often present tableaus and multilingual words arranged loosely around a theme, like the dancers that often appear in his pictures in classical poses, free of all context, dancing to the visual music of Kensuke’s imagery. There are often floating hats and shoes as well, but never a sense of absence or loss to be found in these items cut loose from their owners. On the contrary, an inviting warmth permeates Kensuke’s work, as well as a knowing acknowledgement of the canvas's limitations, as well as its possibilities.
