Jenifer Carey

A Maze of Milieu
July 23 - August 13, 2010 Reception: Thursday August 5, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Sunlight floods Jenifer Carey’s compositions, her lively use of color bringing the scenes to life. One can almost hear the instruments, distant shorebirds, and the clinking of spoons against saucers. Even her bronze sculptures seem frozen in time, as though ready to begin performing at any moment. Throughout Carey’s works runs an intuitive appreciation for the interactions and motion of gatherings. There is an easy freedom to her figurative studies on jazz musicians, people relaxing in cafes and along the shore, and the rhythmic harmony of fishermen working to haul in their day’s catch. The influence of Matisse in Carey’s prints and oil paintings is clear, her use of flattened space and unmuted hues creating an expressive sense of spontaneity. Carey employes a variety of mediums in her work, moving fluidly between painting, printing, and sculpture.

Born in England, Carey now lives in Madrid where she practices as a full-time physiotherapist. Her works have received widespread acclaim in both Spain and Belgium.

Artist Statement

My curiosity about life has led me, in art, to experiment with many methods of plastic expression. But whether I’m working in oil, sculpture or print, it’s all a way of sharing my zest for life, of capturing the instant. Matisse, who has been a major influence in my work, said that a great modern conquest has been the secret of expression through colour. It is precisely this secret that I use with oils, combining my intuition, quick strokes and my transgression of the limits of drawing to achieve expressivity in my paintings, to capture the moment. I reflect the person rather than their likeness. The subject matter of my work is inspired by my passion for beauty, and shaped by my imagination and personal experiences. My daily journey of discovery and rediscovery offers me fresh inspiration to contrive and to share.
