Press Release
With the multilayered creation of her serene and striking landscapes, Jen Romnes' richly textured paintings capture the holistic complexity and delicate balance of nature. Using paint almost as a sculpturing tool to conjure her dramatic colors and forms, Jen evokes the many tactile qualities of her subject matter: the coolness of stone, the splintery bark of trees and the shimmering clarity of luminous ponds. These diverse elements are presented in Jen's acrylic-on-wood works as if in a silent, slow-moving visual dance. Jen constructs a visual dynamic in her landscapes, in which the interdependency of nature's components, along with the beauty, is revealed and orchestrated to a satisfying visual wholeness.
A passionate observer of the environment in all its complexity, Jen Romnes strives to capture nature's struggles in a moment of beauty. In doing so, she pays homage to the intricacy of the natural world by mirroring its layers in her work, while also presenting for us landscapes that should be preserved with beauty and dignity.
Artist Statement
My paintings are iconic landscape images. I prefer to paint with acrylics over wood in mid to large sizes. My style is heavy texture with saturated colour in layers. I have always been drawn towards landscapes with my favourite release being the solitude of sketching en plein air. The overall mood is an expression of my emotions, transferring my feelings to anthropomorphize the landscapes. The underlying theme is recording the effects I have seen with climate change and man’s domination of nature, overlapping with my own life experiences and identifying with nature’s struggles. There is an optimistic beauty in my paintings that also mirrors my psyche, capturing an overlap of my life experiences and the landscape’s struggles at a particular moment.
