Press Release
The duality of fragility versus endurance is the dominant message in the artworks of Ivonne Prats. Her recurring themes are childhood, birth and the frailty of innocence. The powerful images answer questions about our existence and draw on memories of loss and joy, on vulnerability in the face of destiny, human emotions, love and suffering. In her urgent and instinctive process, Prats creates an intimate, umbilical connection with our subconscious, using monochromatic blues, grays and earth tones. She creates in parallel media of painting and sculpture; sometimes she develops the two in tandem and sometimes independently of each other, but she always attains a convergence of the concept. Prats draws her inspiration from montages of photographs she has taken and favors acrylic on canvas in her paintings and clay, enamels and oxides in her sculptures.
Ivonne Prats was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico where she lives and works. She has participated in prestigious exhibitions organized by international financial institutions in her native Puerto Rico.
