Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Fine Art Photography
October 27 - November 17, 2009 Reception: Thursday October 29, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Isaac Stackell creates photographs that are poignant, unusual and thought provoking. With crystal-clear focus and dramatic lighting we explore an inventive, Surrealist world of allegory and nuance. The natural elements of fire, wind and water, play an important role in his tableaus. Often employing aphorisms and catchy titles as a jumping off point, we discover figures sleeping buried within snow, a telephone pylon seen through a mysterious mist, and blood seeping from a grey, textured stone.

There is something remarkably fun and fresh about Isaac Images’ body of work, like exploring the world anew. Indeed he provides his audience with a wealth of surreal and touching experiences, significantly able to shift subject and approach. "Images have almost always been a revelation," he explains. "Wherever I am they flash into my brain." Isaac is caught in the moment and he is bringing us with him. The breadth of subjects is mirrored by a long, diverse career with film photography and digital manipulation. Isaac Stackell lives in Montclair, New Jersey.

Artist Statement

Images have almost always been a revelation.  Wherever I am, they flash into my brain. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It’s been that way since I was a kid, one eye closed–being the camera before I ever owned one. Other times, a concept or an idea is the revelation. These images are inspired by movies, theater, books and music. Either way, I have developed a theme that conveys an appreciation of the beauty of an instant in time, visual puns and a self-deprecating sense of humor, with a native New Yorker’s edginess and threat. You got a problem with that?
