Press Release
The paintings of Ian Scott-Reid celebrate the pleasures of simple observation. The waterways of Venice reflect warm light onto the sides of snug pink and beige buildings, while idle tourists in straw hats meander on a Caribbean beach or stroll through busy Italian piazzas. These are brightly colored, tightly rendered works of quiet awareness. He has a humble hand and a delight in sight, like a modern day Vermeer.
Scott-Reid stays just shy of photorealism because he wants you to know these are real paintings. He takes his place within the grand tradition, classically trained in London, England. Using the painting techniques of the Masters, Scott-Reid demonstrates a gift for tone and color. His formal compositions have the graceful balance of Japanese woodblock prints, recalling Hiroshige and Hokusai, with elegantly arranged, flat bold colors. Painting is for him a tour and his recent works are, for us, invitations to travel.
Artist Statement
The concept of realism in my work, which I intensify through good draftsmanship, along with the use of line colour and tone, creates realistic balanced compositions that will give pleasure. Influenced mainly by the Japanese school of flat bold colours, I aim for a freshness and boldness that is stimulating and pleasing to the eye. With my technique I create fresh, modern, realistic paintings by using traditional, sound preparation and skills. In addition the preliminary work is important to the finished creation. Along with exhaustive studies (including drawings) I employ experimentation in line tones and colour beforehand, so that I can paint the final work with freshness, boldness and a sense of fun.
