Press Release

Working with rapid, streamlined brushstrokes and bold primary colors, Ellen Juell creates works that connect on a deeper level through their purity of expression.  Her interest lies mainly in figures and facial expressions – themes that recur through her canvases.  Juell employs a stylized, partly abstract method, which owes much to both the Impressionists and Expressionists.  She prefers acrylic over the more traditional oil paints as this gives a speed and immediacy to her work which adds immense vitality and verve.  Acrylic also allows an intensity of color without bleed and which dries rapidly, so colors appear fresh and vibrant side by side. For Juell, the process of communication is essential, as communication is the keystone of all artworks.  Within the artworks the viewer can identify and add their own experiences to the pieces.  The communication of inspiration and optimism is one of the driving forces behind her work.

Ellen Juell currently lives and works in Oslo, Norway, and has exhibited widely.

Artist Statement

Both impressionistic and expressionistic styles characterize my works. I put great emphasis on colours in my paintings. Concerning technique, I work fast; acrylic demands spontaneity and creativity. Often I use a palette-knife. My artistic inspirations are the human body, and human faces and their expressions. It's exciting and interesting. I find genuine joy in expressing a thought or idea, and this is the base of my painting process. I try to satisfy the need to express a sort of truth or refection through my artwork, because I believe in communication through painting. A certain level of philosophy and psychology thus act as my starting point. Sometimes this gives me the desire to be somewhat provocative in my artworks. However I am always optimistic about life and my intention is to express my optimism. I believe art and artworks to be vital in the struggle for harmony.
