Sensorial Realities
October 2 - October 23, 2009 Reception: Thursday October 8, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Chris Stone's sculptures of the human body work intimately with the grain and the flow inherent in his material, usually marble, as he creates his subtly powerful pieces. Thanks to his early training in cabinetmaking, Chris' craft invokes the textures of the stone with a woodworker's skill. His pieces also at times have a fluid look that varies from realistic depictions of the body to more abstract, stylized and dramatic pieces. Whatever form his work takes, however, Chris is first and foremost always engaging in a dialectic with his chosen material. His finished shapes curve and wrap around the stone, as well as support and highlight the qualities which make stone aesthetically pleasing—its weight and luminescence, and the surprising spectrum of its thicknesses and textures.

Chris Stone's sculptures bring out both the creaminess of stone as well as its durability, and he creates stunning pieces which nurture our desire for engaging visual forms.

Artist Statement

Although I have been involved in the world of art and design all my working life it was not until I was fortunate enough to meet and collaborate with Barry Flanagan that with his help, guidance, and encouragement I devoted my time to full-time sculpture. Since then I have worked with all sculptural mediums, but I always return to stone and marble. At the stone quarry I seek out a piece of marble for a particular project, looking for colour, grain, and density. For me many are beautiful because they are real, natural, they can hold and reflect the light and shadows, and what I carve from them will do the same, will catch the eye and hold the attention. Such is the power of natural beauty - and because of it I am happy to give the love and dedication required in the creation of a sculpture.
