The Apex of Transcendence
November 23 - December 14, 2010 Reception: Thursday December 2, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Chantal Westby creates works of art that not only speak of her own memories but also encourage the spectator to investigate their own. The artist attributes her vision to her desire to encourage a visual dialogue between the spectator and herself. She accomplishes this task through her large-scale acrylic paintings. Her compositions elevate recognizable forms and subjects to an abstract level, stripping them of their tangible boundaries and allowing them to exist in their most organic state.  Westby furthers this abstract quality by altering the perspective, often presenting her depicted scenes in a di sotto in su style. In doing so, she creates a field of depth that allows the spectator to look up into the compositions towards illusionistic upper thresholds, intensifying the emotions captured on the canvas support. Westby hopes that her paintings create a rapport between her most intimate emotions and those of the viewer.

Born in France, Westby migrated to the United States in the 1980s and has actively painted in Pennsylvania since her arrival.

Artist Statement

When I confront a blank canvas, I bring to it an image previously seen but which exists at this point only in my mind. From there I give my imagination full rein, ignoring the artificial boundaries of space and time. My goal is to create an image which is intensely personal, yet also recognizable and meaningful to the viewer. This requires  common ground where our emotions can engage in a dialogue. My work finds that point of engagement in the representation of the intense spiritual content of the visible world, in my overwhelming certainty of the existence of a higher power, directing not only human efforts, but also all order or disorder that exists in the universe. The joy I derive from creation derives from the intense effort required to express my deepest emotions in abstract form. It is precisely this joy which I want my viewer to share.
