French artist Brigitte Martinez paints with an understated confidence, and a quiet elegance that permeates the fluidity of each sweeping stroke. One experiences these paintings with more than one’s eyes, sensing a feeling of warmth, the breath of wind on satin, and the cold, impenetrable depth of the sea. Sensual shapes and suggestions of figures and landscapes emerge occasionally from the intricacy of her tightly crafted abstraction. Other times Martinez draws inward, creating elemental works of freedom, clarity, and a passion for pure color which recalls fire, water, mist, and air. Working in oil on canvas and wood with a duality of styles and techniques, Martinez’s paintings are rendered in both black and white and color, her brushstrokes varying from voluptuously smooth, flowing curves to rougher, more linear and staccato marks.
Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Brigitte Martinez studied interior design and architecture at the Camondo School in Paris. She later won professional recognition for her artistic works in exhibitions worldwide including in France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and the United States.
