Press Release
Bert Munoz's kaleidoscopic paintings conjure futuristic and visionary worlds with witty composition and vivid arrangements of shape and color. With a passion for large-scale works that skirt the edge between the abstract and the representational, Bert subjects naturalistic, identifiable shapes to his tweaking of perspective and dimension. Skyscrapers slant and mutate into geometric forms. A human figure melds with a background of foliage and gravity-defying, multihued organic bubbles that float amidst ribbons of liquid color. Human eyes peer out at us as if from a surreal forest.
These worlds are alien, to be sure, yet the warm colors, soft spherical shapes, and backgrounds of dark blue night sky or deep ocean invite investigation and exploration. Bert Munoz wants the viewer of his art to be taken to another world, even if temporarily. He certainly accomplishes this, and he does it by speaking to that part of us which can imagine these other worlds along with him. He takes us on a journey and we find we are right at home.
