Benjaporn Apple Cox Ngarmkrerkchote

The Persistence of Form
May 11 - June 1, 2010 Reception: Thursday May 13, 2010 6-8 PM

Press Release

Benjaporn "Apple Cox" Ngarmkrerkchote is a deliciously fun artist whose whimsical world of elephants, sunset waltzes, strawberry trees, fairies and snowmen has delighted audiences around the world. There is a disarming joy and optimism within her watercolor paintings, but it would be a mistake to class this as naivety. She has an elegant feel for line and form, creating a stage for her characters with ease and flair in a style that is instantly recognizable. She allows her mind to daydream in search of inspiration, "[I] try not to think or expect perfection when I paint," she explains. Her approach with watercolors is bright and lively, with loose areas of color beneath strong black outlines. A stark white background makes the vivid hues pop while shifting our eyes around the picture.

Apple Cox’s work has already gained much recognition since her artwork can be found in many national retailers applied to a range of consumer items, from kitchenware and gifts, to websites and educational materials. Born in Thailand, Apple Cox currently lives in Washington State.

Artist Statement

My interest in art began early, perhaps even as early as 5 years of age, when I began to learn calligraphy from a teacher in my native Thailand. The techniques I learned then are ones that are still part of my paintings today. The encouragement of my family and teachers was crucial to my artistic development when I was growing up. They taught me to judge my work by the happiness it brought me and those who saw it, and this is something that resonates with my until today. My greatest wish for my art is for it to make other people feel happy and positive. When this happens it completes my sense of fulfilment as an artist.
