Inspired by the figure of the gynoid—the female human-like robots that are a common trope in science fiction and mythology—Spanish artist Baeza Stanicic paints new visions of the female form, reconfigured from a retro-futuristic perspective. Using a unique style that he terms technological realism, Baeza begins each painting in a classical manner, adding layers of paint to build a realistic look. The latter layers are then stylized using pastels and pencils, lending an ultra-modern feel to the finished figure.
In Baeza’s paintings, there is a strong definition of line and form, and his use of light and shadow work to further highlight the contrasts. Composition is employed purposefully and tells an important part of the story, adding a sense of human feeling and expression to figures that are otherwise mechanized. Yet it is the intrinsic warmth that lies just beneath the robotic exteriors that gives the real message of Baeza’s art, one that speaks of the indomitable spirit of what it truly means to be human.
