Altered States of Reality: an Exhibition of Analog and Digital Fine Art Photography
April 19 - May 10, 2011 Reception: Thursday April 21, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Through her distinctive work, award-winning artist Yvonne Ribes Zankl seeks to break down borders between emotions, ideas and their portrayal. Zankl’s photographs are a process of discovery. Her camera acts to provide a purity of awareness, capturing impressions to be shared, contemplated and absorbed. We are presented with pensive portraiture, fiery tableaux of love and enchanting landscapes. While viewing Zankl’s photographs we are often provided with multiple planes, viewing a subject through reflection, cast in deep shadow, or through textured windowpanes. This treatment has an impressionistic effect, savoring the fleeting moment through all the senses. Another stylistic approach she favors is to break images into single frames to be mounted on the wall in various configurations. These works take on a deeply spiritual aspect, acting like a shrine to the subject. The interpretation of Zankl’s work is always left to the audience. As she says, “I am an observer and I don’t only want to express myself but help others express themselves through my artwork. I give them a new ‘mouth.’”

Zankl resides in Spain.

Artist Statement

Photography is the weapon I use to cope with life. Through my work I become aware of my own existence. My goal is to convert the intangible into 3 dimensions in order to possess it or get rid of it. When painting I prefer oil-based colors on canvas or wood and lately I’ve experimented with watercolors. I use Photoshop for my photographs, usually only to improve lighting and contrast, although I manipulate some images more drastically. I consider Photoshop a great creative tool for photographers. I feel a photograph has turned out very well when I no longer feel a separation from my artwork. I think technique is important, as are high quality materials, but the most important thing is preserving the essence of expression. I like to produce high quality prints with a matt finish. I usually mount them on aluminium and laminate them in order to protect them.
