Press Release
Yolande Bennett's paintings have evolved from a background in interior design. The many layers of paint accumulated can be translated into years passed in one’s lifetime and symbolize either surfaced or submerged memories depending on the clarity of the textured elements visible. Some memories are vivid and always remain surfaced while others are faded or gone completely, she refers to them as “mindscapes”. The rich textured elements may be construed to generate a sense of déjà vu to a particular place and time in history. Bennett’s unique works display an artist who has fully realized the communicative power of color, while harnessing the unusual effects of chance within an artwork. Her paintings are usually large and may often take unusual formats, sprawling canvases allow audiences to stroll alongside while examining a piece. Though employing a robust and confident approach with color, there remains a delicate sensibility to Bennett’s work; forms appear to recede into the background while others spring forth. While engaged in the creative process Bennett is transported into a personal realm of awareness. Her work suggests dual realities, that of the physical and psychic worlds coexisting alongside one another. Yolande Bennett exhibits frequently throughout Australia.
Artist Statement
I have chosen abstraction as the vehicle to convey images of things seen and unseen in my mind. The physical processes involved in producing these paintings is almost as important as the finished piece. The textural planes have an effect of encouraging the tactile desire within us to connect not only physically but psychologically to the images and also encompass the energy exerted which is evident in the movement of the paint and mixed media across each canvas. The usage of paint is a metaphor for the imperfection of the individual through various uneven application methods. Through the engagement of my reflexive outlook, I combine my interest in all humankind in a way which relates to this milieu with the knowledge that history basically repeats itself although it may manifest itself in different historical contexts.
