July 21 - August 11, 2009 Reception: Thursday July 23, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Vladimir Titov's sophisticated works of geometric abstraction exemplify the artistic sensibilities and expert eye of a maturely developed artist. Utilizing the repetition of color and shape, Titov's paintings posses a formal balance that gives the often completely abstracted images a sense of weight and stability. Titov primarily works in two areas: pure abstraction and abstracted still life painting. His simplified still lifes, reminiscent of the post-Impressionist paintings of Paul Cézanne, create enormous visual intrigue, as they playfully engage the viewer in a detective game of sorts. What first appears as an amalgam of shapes, slowly joins together to create a representational image. As such, Titov creates an intimate moment with the viewer, engaging directly, and infinitely with each new passerby.

A native of Russia, Vladimir Titov has exhibited his work extensively throughout his home country. After studying art at St. Petersburg Art College, Titov has gone on to enjoy a successful career as a full-time artist.

Artist Statement

My most profound memory of my childhood is of being taken for the first time to visit the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, where I was introduced to the work of impressionist artists. I had never seen anything like it and it made a great impression on me and my development. Later on, cultural influences also left their mark on me--both the literature and the artwork of my native Russia have been very important to me as a person and as an artist. Painting is very necessary to me, a fundamental part of who I am. The hardest time in my life was when I had no oil paint. It is how I express myself and also is a vital part of how I relate to the world; every time I paint a picture I experience something new.
