Vera L.P. Cauwenberghs

Symphony of Color
April 24 - May 15, 2012 Reception: Thursday April 26, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

The oil-on-linen paintings of Belgian artist Vera L.P. Cauwenberghs are as authentic as they are inspiring. Shedding any preconceptions of modern art movements, she seeks to paint subjects both recognizable and realistic, intended to reassure the viewer and reflect the immense beauty of the world that surrounds them. Cauwenberghs draws much of her inspiration from long-standing Flemish artistic traditions, with a focus on the detailed use of line and form, and a dedication to color. She employs the highest quality of materials in her art, using no additives or varnish that might eventually cause deterioration.

Cauwenberghs wishes for her art to be a remedy against the gloom and despair that seem to consume our media-driven modern world. Through her work, she encourages her viewers to take a good look at all the richness that surrounds them. As she explains, “What I paint exists. Those colors are all around us. We just fail to see them.” Indeed, she manages to capture the breathtaking wonder in the ordinary, reminding the viewer of the true beauty that exists in our daily lives.

Artist Statement

The media emphasize the problems in our society. We forget as we grow older to be astonished by the beauty that surrounds us. After a dark and extremely confrontational crisis in my life, I realised how lucky I am to be able to see and enjoy all the colours and beauty around me. I paint and draw what we take for granted: animals, landscapes, daily objects…The bright colours send a message of unbeatable optimism. I’d like my work to be a remedy against the gloomy messages we are flooded with... The end of the throwaway society increases the need for quality in art. Therefore I use the best possible materials: paint, applied properly, that can stand the test of time and doesn’t lose its colour. The carrier is firm linen, stretched on a pine wood frame. All is done by hand. In that sense my work is honest and authentic.
