Valdemaro Grifoni’s work, which can include such diverse subjects as fragmented and undulating landscapes of metal hills, angular plastic bodies frozen in time and space and spiral jetties of cut-glass, make it instantly clear that here is no ordinary photographer. His extraordinary photographs take small details, unusual scenes and odd juxtapositions and frame them, distorting only through the extreme focus on such ordinarily unconsidered matters. These images are arresting – shot in black and white, they possess a depth and drama quite unique. Aesthetically pleasing in their stylish austerity, Grifoni also shows himself to be a master of composition and pattern, setting the shots to create strong lines that draw the eye through the image and create tension between the elements. His evocative works speak not of real times and places but of the landscapes of the mind, of time and memory and those things past, contrasted with the jarringly modern. They speak directly to the mind’s eye, creating an unforgettable impression.
Valdemaro Grifoni currently lives and works in Florence, where he was born.
