With his imaginative configurations of urban landscapes, Tristan Pauli has given us fantastic new realms to explore. In a tangled order, cities built by unseen hands rise into the heavens. Tunnels, spires, arches and columns intersect and loop around each other, tempting our eyes to unravel the hidden order of things in this strange world. The cities are topped by a variety of implements like antennae, windmills, chains, ducts and even construction cranes that reveal a city in flux. The expansive skies that spread out in the background are colorful yet subdued, adding to a sense of mystery and longing. Pauli’s process is very intuitive, starting with a blank sheet of paper and allowing the composition to reveal itself. In this way, Pauli’s fantasy cities are constructed in the same way as real cities. “I walk every step that I draw,” he says. “I imagine every single brick I lay.”
Tristan Pauli’s work is in private collections in South America, Europe and the United States. He lives in Cordoba, Argentina.
