Tim Brumbeloe bridges the gap between classicism and modernity in his photographs. His use and manipulation of light is particularly striking in his latest works devoted to Italian settings, evoking the chiaroscuro of Renaissance artwork and the bright purity of sunlight by turns. While Brumbeloe has a magician's touch, he uses it to augment, rather than conceal, the realism of his depictions. He evokes the textural feel of walls and structures, lending a sensuously tactile quality to works such as “Isolation” and “Always Walking.” Digital photography and reproduction formats, so often sterile, become painterly in Brumbeloe's expert hands. Clearly, Indiana native Brumbeloe has an affinity with European subjects (which stemmed from a continental tour in his teens). Yet, his modern American sensibility is also apparent: The placement of color in “Isolation” is reminiscent of Mark Rothko, while the composition of the image itself echoes certain Rauschenberg works. Multiple Addy Award-winner Tim Brumbeloe worked as a commercial studio photographer for more than twelve years before devoting himself full-time to his artistic vision. His Italian series, which has garnered renown in public displays and private collections alike, has been his labor of love since 1997.
