Teresa Young

Beyond Borders: an Exhibition of Fine Art from Canada
October 7 - October 28, 2011 Reception: Thursday October 13, 2011 6-8 PM

Press Release

Teresa Young picks up her brush and transports us to a wondrous, crystalline world. With acrylic paint she creates a range of incredible effects, from swirling glassine abstracts to delicate translucent bubbles and elegant figures. She knows this subject well due to her experience working with glass, and she uses that knowledge to create mesmerizing, delicate beauty through the greater potential offered by her choice of varied media. In her illuminating sculptural pieces, we find the full physical expression of her paintings. The various textures shine and dazzle, while the black linework defines the colorful variety of hues and helps our eye to navigate the composition. These are surreal artworks of pure joy and pleasure, and she has often referred to them as “emotional landscapes.” A prolific artist, Young is constantly experimenting with style and medium. In addition to acrylic and glass, she also uses pen, ink, and pastels, as well as glass paints on glass.

Teresa Young has exhibited frequently in recent years and has seen her work featured on the internet and television. She lives in Canada.

Artist Statement

My style spans a range of surrealism and abstraction because sometimes, emotions are more powerfully expressed with a central subject that can act as a focal point that the audience can directly identify with. This means that I'll sometimes use human faces or eyes (generally) for clarity and emotional impact. Other pieces will be wholly abstracted, as they are more 'emotional landscapes' meant to be interpreted by the viewer in a more subjective fashion. What do I hope to achieve? I'd like to leave a legacy of my life through my artwork. I'd like to have others enjoy it and get something real out of it, some sort of connection to the beauty of art and how it enriches humanity on a daily basis.
