Suzete Martins

Four Degrees of Abstraction
October 2 - October 23, 2009 Reception: Thursday October 8, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Suzete Martins works with an eclectic range of materials and styles to create a body of work that is uniquely her own.  Rich with texture, movement and shimmering color, Martins’ paintings often defy categorization.  She explores both figurative and abstract representation, displaying considerable talent in both realms.  Each work, vibrantly textured by tactile brushstrokes and energetic gesture, reveals a deep felt love for the act of painting and a carefully studied technique.  Whether working as a representational artist or an abstract painter, Martins consistently creates beautifully balanced compositions, wherein areas of light and dark, saturation and subtlety, and positive and negative space interplay in a symphony of color and texture.

Born in Brazil, Suzete Martins has studied art at a serious level from childhood, having completed major coursework in Studio Art and Art History at university level.  She lives and works in the United States and has participated in numerous international exhibitions.

Artist Statement

From a young age, colors and forms have caught my attention, so I decided to use art as an instrument to register the emotions that I live everyday.  To reach my goal of conveying my emotions in my artwork, I use vibrant colors, different materials and techniques.  Just as the range of my emotions is broad so is the range of materials. I use in my work: fabric, sand, paper, different types of paint, acrylic plaster and seeds.  My technique and materials vary greatly depending upon my mood and the mood of my painting.
