Press Release
Melding the beauty of naturalistic representation with the expressive elements of abstraction, Sunil Howlader creates his own unique style rich with spiritual undercurrents and cultural influences. Employing a diverse assortment of media, from oil and acrylic paints to pastels on paper, Sunil Howlader’s light-filled color palette is characterized by sophisticated washes of translucent hues. Negating the presence of brushstrokes with these expanses of blended colors, Howlader deftly transitions between the realms of representation and abstraction within a single piece. Howlader’s color choices carry weighty significance, with many hues holding symbolic meaning. Following the gradation of color across the surface, the eye moves from bright white, signifying the future, to dark cool tones, representing the past.
Widely exhibited throughout Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia, Sunil Howlader’s award winning artistry is unmatched in his native Bangladesh. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Dhaka and was an International Artist-in-Residence at the Griffis Art Center, New London, CT. His paintings are included in the collections of UNICEF and the National Academy of Fine and Performing Arts of Bangladesh.
Artist Statement
I started painting in a realistic style many years ago as a student. However, in creating my own style, I chose Semi-abstract Expressionism because it allows the freedom to add emotions, feelings and ideas to what I see. I express these with meaningful lines, forms and colors. Memories of my childhood in the southern village of Barguna, Bangladesh inspire many paintings. Life there is lived close to nature and God, and images from Hindu festivals often appear in my paintings - especially the elephants! My paintings of nature contain much symbolism, with water-lilies symbolizing beauty, fish representing abundance, and horses (destination) for our attempts to reach conscious or unconscious goals. Exploring subjects such as past and future journeys, I use white to symbolize the future, blue for dreaming and green for life. Recently, I've begun painting my beautiful Southeastern New England home: the ponds, harbors, fall colors, and people.
