Sudnya Shroff

Sudnya Shroff / a solo exhibition
September 15 - October 5, 2012 Reception: Thursday September 20, 2012 6-8 PM

Press Release

Indian American artist Sudnya Shroff creates striking abstract images that serve as snapshots of complex internal emotional states. In her art, she has moved away from traditional techniques and eliminated the use of brushes in favor of a more intimate approach which uses free-flowing paint, manipulated by the artist’s bare hands. It is this which allows her deepest emotions to come through. What results are dynamic expressionistic images in which paint is swirled and dripped across the canvas to create an effect both spontaneous and compelling.

A hallmark of Shroff’s work is the passionately vibrant palette of colors she brings to each canvas. This, combined with her flowing compositions, offers a sense of wholeness and completion, a chance to go deep within to gain a better perspective on the larger truths of our human existence. In the end, Shroff wishes to offer her viewers “a chance to see beyond what we are conditioned to know and recognize, thereby deepening our understanding of ourselves and our connection to this universe.”

Artist Statement

My paintings are snapshots of my internal emotional state at the time of creation, not unlike photographs that serve the same purpose for our external states. When words fall short, colors help me fill the spaces. My artistic process is a result of countless experiments trying to find my individual form of expression. I use free-flowing paint manipulated with my bare hands and a dynamic canvas, allowing my deepest emotions to come through. For me, making and experiencing art is all about conveying emotions and being moved. Every time I pour paint to create my desired composition, maneuvering the flowing colors on canvas without tools, without separation, I find myself in my treasured zone  - a zone where I think freely, feel freely, uninhibited and at peace. As long as my work invokes a response and I connect with the viewer, I enjoy the satisfaction of having succeeded in expressing myself.
