Stuart French creates paintings of magnificent color. It is his profound use of color that serves as the mouthpiece for his message often speaking more acutely than the representational elements. Born in 1961 in Cobden Victoria, Australia, French has been drawing and painting since youth; his influences are varied and include architecture and design. His imagery seems to be barely contained by the edges of the canvas, they contain an intensity that is both visual and psychological. Faces are mask-like, rendered with hollow eyes; surrealist elements, along with bold shapes, and powerful lines are all included in French’s painting repertoire. He studied design at Mt Gambier Institute of TAFE, and learned oil painting under the tutelage of renowned realist painter Kathleen Edkins. French’s art has been met with vigorous attention in his native Australia, and his reputation continues to grow as he receives international recognition and representation.
