Press Release
The soft, evocative paintings of Sofia Minson celebrate the particular uniqueness of the land and cultures that the artist has been inspired by in her life. Her painting style is smooth, shadowy and elegant. The figures she draws are immense; their faces and bodies capture the viewer’s attention entirely with their stately presence. Her landscapes are dark and spare, almost like a memory in the mind’s eye. Minson uses shadow exquisitely in her works to convey mood and render shapes. Her color choices are minimal, but bold when she chooses to use them, making a dramatic statement. The artist states that her paintings are all inspired by her “deep respect for the land and mythology of Aotearoa/New Zealand” as well as other cultures she has experienced. The winner of two national art competitions, Sofia has exhibited her work widely throughout her native country of New Zealand.
