Sibylle Pieters

The Persistence of Form
November 20 - December 11, 2009 Reception: Thursday December 3, 2009 6-8 PM

Press Release

Sibylle is an artist for whom vision and visual representation are one and the same. Overawed and fascinated by the majesty and subtlety of the natural world, her works highlight her subjects with the utmost empathy, and her subjects are the benefactors of her idealism. Employing the pointillist method, Sibylle shapes her work through layers and layers of skillfully applied dots, each distinct, so that the image builds up gradually and from a distance appears solid. Only when seen up close can the true brilliance of the work be appreciated. This layering allows Sibylle to intensify the shadows and overall chiaroscuro effect in many of her works, and also gives her scope to concentrate the gaze on facial posturing and the eyes. Her pieces thus display an intensity and directness rarely found in the art world.

Concerned with the detrimental effects of humanity on the natural world, Sibylle’s artworks are set pieces that illustrate the beauty and the tragedy that surrounds us in the modern world.

Artist Statement

My main artistic technique is Pointillism. Most of the time I rely on snapshots and quick sketches as the source material of my drawings. Then, with an ink pen and an average 2500 dots per square inch, I layer dots. Combined with a heightened sense of light and shadow, I polish the charismatic personae of my subjects through details and the persistence of forms while concentrating on the intensity found in the eyes and facial posturing. My recurrent depiction of animals and human subject matter comes not only from a desire to draw from life but also reflects my deep passion for nature and my concern with the detrimental effects humanity has on it.
