Press Release
Sherrard Grauer's diversity of style comes out of her unique approach to her subject matter. Whether detailing the motions of fish or creating the painterly strokes of an expressionist bank of clouds, she displays a passionate openness to experience, a passion which could not be restricted to one particular style or medium. What all her works have in common for the viewer is the drama communicated through stunning sensory forms. Sherrard's subject, more often than not, is the mystery and power of nature as it exists both within and without. By looking inward, she is both examining her responses to the outer world and recording the world of psychological forces within. She has said she does not believe in wholly abstract painting, that every work of art one creates has a reference.
Sherrard Grauer taps into universal, elemental forces and brings them to the canvas with a grace, beauty and power that is deeply visionary.
Artist Statement
My work is my means of coping with the overwhelming richness, detail, and process of the visual world I am privileged to live in, and with humanity's puzzling carryings-on. In other words, I try to make an image that implies a good story, involving beauty wherever possible.
