Understanding the vicissitudes of human nature and character is the impetus of Chilean mixed media artist Sarah Cousineau’s works. Alloyed with her dexterously skillful painting, Cousineau’s imagery is formed through her poignantly delicate brushwork, making the ordinary sublimely beautiful and breathtaking. Almost scientific in her approach to theme, the artist uses imagery empirically, often making animals into metaphors for the vast spectrum of human emotions and feelings. “Behind every animal represented in my work, there is a portrait of a human being and its complexities; his ideas, emotions, tendencies and values, mixed with its interpretations of modern times,” she says. Cousineau thus subtly draws viewers into introspection concerning their own personalities and social complexities. In this way the formulaic structure of the compositions is balanced by the melodious, exquisite beauty that stems from her creative approach. Through her ingenious use of painterly traditions, she is entrenched in conceptual painting yet universally accessible.
Born in Canada, Sarah Cousineau is inspired by her travels throughout the world.
