The work of Samantha (Hsiu Chen) Lu transports us to a world that combines chromatic power with soothing beauty. Without economizing on intensity, these diverse compositions express a positive and life-affirming perspective on the world. Each aspect of her creations is given a completeness of expression that contributes to the unusual beauty of this universe of color and shapes. Typically, Lu works with a palette knife and brush. Building up the canvas with numerous layers of paint, she then scrapes it off in certain places to create her characteristically bold explosions of texture, rhythm and mood. Inspired by the four seasons, Lu often uses photographs or sketches taken from life which show the earth’s natural transitions, relying heavily on her own sense of improvisation to push the piece into the highest emotional registers.
Samantha Lu was born in 1957 in Taiwan and currently lives and works in California. Lu finished her MFA at the San Francisco Academy of Art University in 2008.
